Many ideas should come to you naturally however; being creative alone is not enough and is not the only requirement for this job.

You will need to be organized, attentive to detail and commercially minded. This is because you are not simply a designer but a businessperson as well. You must organize your schedule to accommodate your time between designing and dealing with your clients. Marketing yourself is essential to ensure continuity of your business.

Computer skills are necessary if you want to succeed as an interior designer in today’s marketplace. You will need to learn how to use the various design software, such as CAD, which will help you to create 2D and 3D designs and visuals.

You will need to polish your people coordination and communication skills. An interior designer needs to be a great communicator who can motivate professionals, such as electricians, plumbers, and architects. These people will turn into reality what you have visualized and designed.

In addition, you must avoid rubbing the authorities the wrong way. Your designs need to meet certain regulations and be within the law in terms of safety and social acceptability. For that reason, be equipped with the building and design codes of that particular region.

You should be good at doing many things simultaneously, multi-tasking and handling more than one project at any time.  You will also have to be a quick thinker, a solution provider.

Finally numeracy, the ability to handle and make calculations. This quality is vital for surveying and making considerations of the available space and any adjustments needed must be precise.
